Immediately after the fusion of Sony and BMG, a re-release of "ELO's Greatest Hits" was released in 2005 in the USA in a cardboard slipcase with printed sticker and liner notes.

It had the new title "ELO - The Hits." Even the old order code ZK 36310 of the CD release from the year 1986 was taken over by Sony BMG. Thus the song versions are as on the original album.

Rock 'N' Roll Is King

On 6th June 2005, it happened once again. Sony BMG released an official compilation album in the UK with a large-scale marketing campaign. "All Over The World - The Very Best Of Electric Light Orchestra," Epic 520129 2, was promoted as a release for the 35 years anniversary of the Electric Light Orchestra.

It was promoted with promo posters, T-shirts, squashable balls, key-rings, ELO-Frisbees and a TV commercial, in which the "Out Of The Blue" space ship was assembled in the orbit and flying in space. The 12-page booklet is held entirely in outer space optics and contains four photo-pages of Jeff and E.L.O..

Four more pages contain new liner notes, which Jeff Lynne had written in April 2005. The UK-release featured a card for mobile ringing tones. For 3 pounds each, one could download 19 of the 20 songs (the title song is missing!). The blue-held label shows the spaceship in orbit.

The collection provides a good cross-section of E.L.O.'s song repertoire. Apart from Can't Get It Out Of My Head, all songs from "ELO's Greatest Hits" are contained. With four songs from "Discovery" and "Out Of The Blue", as well as a song each from "Xanadu," "Time" and "Secret Messages", with Xanadu (New Version) and Alright, for the first time songs from "Flashback "and "Zoom" appear on an official compilation.

The albums "Balance Of Power", "Eldorado", "ELO II" and "No Answer" were not included. The Diary Of Horace Wimp, Rockaria! and Wild West Hero show that "All Over The World" was clearly oriented on the UK chart hits, as in the overall concept special country releases were planned. Most of the compilation songs are contained in their album versions.

On Mr. Blue Sky the tuning intro is missing, Evil Woman and Strange Magic have no orchestra opening, Shine A Little Love and Rock'n'Roll Is King are single versions, Ma-Ma-Ma Belle is faded at the "doo round-up". Alright is the 3:10-version. "All Over The World" reached # 6 in the UK charts.

The UK edition was released as an European edition with different release dates in Ireland, Italy, Switzerland, Holland, Poland, Argentina, Australia, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, Finland, United States and on 10th October also in Germany. Canada followed about a year later.

The USA edition, EK 94489, was published on 2nd August and lists Can't Get It Out Of My Head on the sticker, although the song is not on the album, because the EU-edition had been exactly used. The CD label lists in addition at the outer edge the song titles.

The Japanese edition, MHCP 759, was published as a first edition on 20th July 2005 in a white cardboard slipcase decorated with ELO logos, while the second edition from 19th January 2006 was only decorated with an Obi-sleeve. In contrast to the other editions this Japanese compilation opens with Twilight. The track is faded in like on the single version and is faded quieter at the end from 3:34 to 3:37. Since Twilight had been in Japan one of the biggest hits for E.L.O., it couldn't be left off from the release of course. So Wild West Hero was dropped instead.

The other songs follow in the normal sequence and in the same versions, as all songs of the different CD-releases originate from the same master tape. A 24-page black and white booklet is included in addition, with more Liner Notes, in which it is once again stressed that "All Over The World is the beginning of a series of surprises in 2005." The lyrics are reprinted in English and Japanese.

The Korean edition of 'All Over The World ", 520162 9 SB30041C, takes a step further and deletes three songs from the normal track listing. The Diary Of Horace Wimp, Wild West Hero and Showdown were replaced by the songs Midnight Blue, Getting To The Point and Ticket To The Moon, which were added at the end of the CD.

The big hit in Korea, Midnight Blue, was - as like the other songs - included in his album version. The booklet has a slightly different layout of the liner notes, as the last line from page 4 has moved on to page 7 and their last line is on page 8, which means that the last sentence on that page: "... Magic was always there working with me. " is missing, as page 11 has not been changed. Moreover, another 12-page black and white booklet, in which two pages of liner notes by a Korean pop-journalist in Korean characters and the 20 Lyrics of this edition in English are printed.

The most difficult to get is the Danish edition, Epic 520129 9, as it was only sold in Denmark. On this edition the 15th track Ma-Ma-Ma Belle was exchanged by Last Train To London, which is also featured in his album version. Although the basic idea, to release in each country a specific issue was not fully exhausted, the worldwide chart success generated interest in E.L.O. and paved the way for the continuation of the remaster albums.

On 13th March 2006 EMI published in the UK on EMI Gold the album "The Collection", 0946 3 55978 2 0, which was to make E.L.O.'s Harvest material available in the low-price range. It replaced the 10 years previously published "The Gold Collection "

In addition to seven regular album versions, the Roll Over Beethoven UK album version and the 10538 Overture single version, are two quadraphonic versions of Look At Me Now and The Battle Of Marston Moor on the album, here strikingly listed as (Alternate Mix), in order not to get confused with the many new multi-channel systems. Whisper In The Night (Take 1 - Early Version) was already published as a hidden track on the album "First Light" in 2001.

The 12-page booklet contains several coloured pictures of the band and new liner notes by Rob Caiger. So now all references to ELO Part II on E.L.O. publications currently on sale are deleted. "The Collection" has due to the total transformation of the booklet and song selection nothing in common with the 1996 "The Gold Collection".

To tie in with the originally scheduled launch of the second phase of the Remaster series by the Electric Light Orchestra on 22nd May, Sony BMG pressed at the end of April 2006 the promo compilation "Re-Issues Sampler" with a total of 100 copies and distributed it together with blue vinyl 7" and 5" promo CD singles of Surrender at the beginning of May to a selected circle of Music Press people.

With alternately a regular and a bonus-track per album, all the songs on the "Re-Issues Sampler" are featured in their newly remastered versions. Daybreaker now has a piano outro, which was known before as the piano intro of Ma-Ma-Ma Belle.

Auntie (Ma-Ma-Ma Belle Take 2) had previously been released in 2004 on the compilation "Early Years". Evil Woman is contained with its orchestral introduction, while the U.S. single version of Strange Magic begins with the second slide-guitar riff by Richard Tandy, turns at 2:49 into the sixth and last chorus and is represented for the first time on CD and a compilation album.

The two new E.L.O. singles Surrender and Latitude 88 North are for the first time on an album. Due to the enthusiastic reaction by music critics and radio presenters it was decided to publish Surrender as a download single. Latitude 88 North was to follow eight months later.

The cover artwork of the two promotional singles is based on the "Re-Issues Sampler." Due to the chronological structure every song couple of this album represents the respective remaster album. At that time, a publication of "On The Third Day", "Face the Music" and "A New World Record" was planned in May and for "Out Of The Blue" and "Balance of Power" for September. Although the dates were shifted by four months, this compilation paved the way for the E.L.O. album remaster series.

On 31th July 2006, the EMI 3-CD box, "The Harvest Years", EMI 0946 3 60078 2 3 Harvest SHDW 414 was released.

All song versions had already been released before on the remastered albums "The Electric Light Orchestra", "First Light" (2001), "ELO 2", "The Lost Planet" (2003) and "Early Years" (2004).

Whisper in the Night (Take 1) is the vocal / guitar version, while In Old England Town (Take 1) is also known as quad mix. The songs referred to as “alternate mix” are the Quadraphonic mix versions, and sound here a little more dull due to a mistake made at the mastering of this CD release.

10538 Overture (Alternate Mix), is compared to the version on "Early Years" at the beginning significantly dull.

Within the 20-page booklet, we find unpublished images of E.L.O. and liner notes by Rob Caiger with comments by Jeff and Roy in the form of an interview. The 3-CD box contains apart from the live versions, BBC session tracks and E.L.O. songs on "Harvest Showdown" the entire material of the Harvest years of E.L.O. gutt

The title running is identical with the first 10 Songs of "ELO's Greatest Hits"from 1979.  Except for some reason the last track, Mr Blue Sky is missing, which seems a very strange omission!

Completely unexpected Disky Holland re-released in March 2007 their compilation from 1996, "The Best Of Electric Light Orchestra". Not that anyone would have waited, but apparently Disky thought that they had paid a lot for the rights and it was about time for a new edition.

Strangely, they acted very sparingly both with the title of the album and the colours in the artwork. A newly emerged probably black and white photo of the Electric Light Orchestra from the year 1973, with Jeff Lynne, Colin Walker, Mike Edwards, Jake Commander, Wilf Gibson, Richard Tandy, Michael De Albuquerque and Bev Bevan was used six times in the album artwork. The album bears in thick letters the simple title "ELO", which is subtitled with a small band name.

The song versions correspond to all those on the album "The Best Of Electric Light Orchestra" and also the 1996 published "The Gold Collection" by EMI UK. Roll Over Beethoven is the UK album version without harmonium intro, which was instead added at the beginning of Momma.

The two early versions of Showdown and Ma-Ma-Ma Belle originate from the 1991 UK publication "Early ELO 1971 - 1973", which is now also deleted. It had been replaced by the two 2-CD sets of the "First Light" series. Thus it is very questionable whether Disky was allowed to re-release this compilation at all. But probably Disky has not even inquired at EMI in the UK.

The worldwide success of the compilation album "All Over the World - The Very Best Of Electric Light Orchestra" in 2005, made a follow-up almost a must. On 15.10.2007 Sony BMG published "Ticket To The Moon - The Very Best Of Electric Light Orchestra, Volume 2", 88697 17993 2.

Jeff Lynne had selected another 20 pieces by the Electric Light Orchestra for this album and written a brief commentary on the album, while Rob Caiger wrote a comment to every song with quotes by Jeff Lynne. The 6-page booklet leaflet had a very beautifully designed layout that fits perfect with the predecessor from 2005.

The versions of the songs are like the album versions, using the cleaned Remaster files. For Twilight a single version had to be created, so the song starts with an extremely fast fade-in. Secret Messages and Eldorado are also faded out quickly, in order not to hear the first notes of the subsequent songs.

In My Own Time and Moments in Paradise are cut a bit too loud, while at Latitude 88 North and Surrender more subtleties can be heard. Albeit not released with the same high advertising expenses as "All Over The World", "Ticket To The Moon" offers the perfect complement, containing almost all singles except of the first two albums.

The best, however, is the addition of the last three singles, which are now seamlessly integrated into the series of E.L.O. songs. A very good idea, to release this "Volume 2". Japan released the album in a Jewel Case with booklet insert as EICP-937 on 20. February 2008. Including a 28-page black/white booklet with liner notes and lyrics in English and Japanese.

Sony BMG USA released in 2007 in the USA, A 712251 entitled "Electric Light Orchestra 2 CD Collection" the two Sony Special Product Alben “Burning Bright” and “ELO Classics”, also with the CD prints of their 1992 and 1990 original releases. Only the front cover artwork of "ELO Classics" shows the re-release from around 1992 with the additional band name and album title. The 4-page booklet sheet is only printed on the outer pages with the song titles. The inside is blank.

There are again no differences because they used the Original-CD's and the songs contained in the same versions like on the individual reviewed albums “Burning Bright” and “ELO Classics”.

Shortly before Christmas 2007 Sony BMG Canada released with "Platinum" a new double-CD compilation on the Madacy label MEG2 53449. The album contains the two U.S. CDs "Burning Bright" and "ELO Classics" with the CD-printings of their first publications in 1992 and 1990. Only the Canada produced 6-page booklet brochure and the depositor bear the name "Platinum".

In addition to the band's history and Jeff Lynne's participation work, the liner notes contain even a paragraph on Bev Bevan, "who kept with its ELO II the ELO name for the fans alive." Jeff Lynnes E.L.O. relaunch in 2001 is however not mentioned. It seems as if BMG (who had E.L.O. Part II under contract before) a greater influence on the liner notes than Sony.

Since the original CDs have been used, the songs are obviously contained in the same versions as on the albums "Burning Bright" and "ELO Classics". The still very unusual song selection of these two Sony Special Products albums together offer a rather interesting cross-section of the E.L.O-back catalogue.

In fact there are 14 Single cuts among the 20 songs. The remaining six tracks are hardly found on E.L.O. compilations and make these compilations rather special, as they show E.L.O. from a different, lesser known side. Even though the world would have not needed "Platinum", it kept the name E.L.O. alive in the record buying public's eye.

BMG goes multimedia! In the Playlist series from the USA, the 2003 album "The Essential Electric Light Orchestra" has been re-released 2008 under the title "Playlist: The Very Best Of Electric Light Orchestra", Epic / Legacy 88697 29802 2, and was extended by an enhanced computer-track.

On this track, you can download PDF files and log via the Internet into sites with pictures of ELO, a discography and liner notes. In addition to various on-screen wallpapers one can download the complete album as MP3 files. This fact is even part of the advertising for the format.

Coupled with the better quality of the CD and the environmentally friendly, because completely biodegradable packaging, Sony BMG tries to keep up with the CD format to the current technical developments. The CD tray is produced completely from paper and cardboard.

A booklet has been omitted, since all information is now available on the CD-ROM track. However, you need Adobe Acrobat Reader to view the PDF files. The song sequence is of course identical with the first publication from the year 2003.

All songs are represented in their album versions, with the exception of Evil Woman and Strange Magic without orchestra Introduction. On Rock'n'Roll Is King only the Album-Outro is missing and Roll Over Beethoven is included in the single version. Whether the idea of Eco-friendly packaging or the availability of the songs as MP3-Files leads to higher sales figures has yet to be shown. Still nice to see though that our favourite band is still taken into account with new ideas.

On 24 November 2008, Sony USA released a Slider Case edition from "Ticket To The Moon", 8867 32819 2, with the “Eco-friendly-package” addition for only 13 US-Dollar. It was released in a beautiful slider box, likes predecessor “All Over The World”.

As a special, the missing booklet could be opened 1:1 via www.legacyrecordings.com/discboxsliders, and turn the pages via mouse click while you read it or printed it.

Apart from that the black & white picture of Jeff Lynne from the “Discovery” photo-sessions was printed in the slider box artwork as coloured picture. An unusual, but nice thing, if you considered that the "full edition" missed that particular picture. Thumps up.
